Northern Rockies Regional District - Fort Nelson

Welcome Visitors!

The Northern Rockies
Your Great Escape

Come North!  Let us share with you the breathtaking beauty of the Northern Rockies, and the countless possibilities for recreation and relaxation tucked within them.

This is your gateway to the northernmost reaches of the world famous Rocky Mountains.  Here the rugged landscape promises incredible scenery and unforgettable encounters – whether your journey takes you 50 feet from the Alaska Highway or 50 miles into the peaks and valleys of the vast backcountry.

Come for a weekend getaway or the vacation of a lifetime… a week-long backcountry hike or a retreat to the solitude of a lakeside lodge… fill your days with outdoor adventure, or simply absorb the peace and wonder of unspoiled, uncrowded, unbelievable nature.

We proudly welcome you to our world, and to the spectacular northern environment we call home.

As a point of service to the visitor, Fort Nelson, “Mile 300” Alaska Highway, offers all the amenities essential to your trip – quality accommodation options, restaurants, stores, and services to meet your needs, and a range of cultural and recreation facilities.

Fort Nelson sits at the centre of the immense Northern Rockies wilderness area.  Nature lovers of all stripes will find their interests fulfilled here, whether you’re captivated by big animals, fur-bearers, birds, or a delicate orchid flourishing near the hot springs.

For the diversity and abundance of its wildlife, this part of British Columbia has been called the “Serengeti of the North”.  Elk, moose, caribou, and bison, Stone’s sheep, the black bear, grizzly and lynx – all these and more make the northern mountains their home.

The Northern Rockies is also becoming known as a world-class destination for backcountry adventure:

Take a flightseeing trip over remote valleys & lakes and alpine meadows carpeted with wildflowers, or get a close-up view while paddling or trekking into one of North America’s last true wilderness spaces.

Drop a line or cast a fly!  Step off the highway to the shaded pool of a meandering river or enjoy the incomparable solitude of a fly-in trip to a cabin on one of the remote crystal lakes and rivers.

Take a guided tour or go it alone!  See some of the most awe-inspiring terrain in the world with an expert guide who can show you hidden secrets or if you’re a hardy enthusiast, challenge yourself to rugged backcountry camping & hiking or push the limit with a canoe or kayak trip on a wild, remote river.  There are even designated routes for your ATV or snowmobile.

Stop in at the Fort Nelson Visitor Centre to equip yourself with all the information you need before heading out.
