Whale Watching

The wonders of whale-watching

From mid-July to October, the giants of the ocean are one of the main attractions on British Columbia’s northern coast. Humpback, gray and killer whales majestically cruise the waters, thrilling sightseers from all over the world.

The salmon-rich waters along the coast and surrounding the 140 islands of Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlottes) are perfect feeding grounds for these spectacular creatures, making it one of the best places in the world to observe them. They are the world’s largest mammals – Humpback and Gray whales, along with giant Orcas, or killer whales, with the cold Pacific waters providing the perfect summer playground. The Humpbacks are a favorite sight, as they heave their giant bodies, arching out of the water, splashing with the slap of their fins.

Orcas, with their massive (average 11-ton) bodies, are known for their distinctive, sleek black-and-white color. Most of these sea-loving creatures measure at least 25 feet by adulthood.

For the ultimate up-close adventure with a whale, rent a kayak in Prince Rupert or on Haida Gwai. Skidegate and Old Masset (now called Haida) are main gateways to many whale-watching tours, by land, sea and by air.

Prince Rupert is another popular whale-watching centre, with an ideal port to accommodate visitors and sightseers. A variety of tours are offered, operating out of Cow Bay, lasting anywhere from several hours, to a weeklong voyage on the high seas.

In addition to whales, your ocean excursion is likely to provide you with marine bird, waterfowl, sea lion, seal, porpoise, and eagle sightings.

A few whaling facts

  • Nearly 20,000 gray whales migrate each year from Northern B.C. to Mexico
  • The best time to view whales from B.C.’s north coast is from mid-July to late October.
  • As in all B.C.’s natural settings, it’s important visitors remember to always respect wildlife, never attempting to feed or disturb the wildlife.
